5 Ways to Support Your Local Music Scene
Being part of a local music scene means more than just showing up to your own gigs. If you really want to see your own music scene thrive, then supporting each other is a great start! Here are 5 simple ways you can help build a stronger scene, with some special attention to the 806 scene!
1. Show Up for Other People's Shows
It’s not all about your own gigs, get out there and support others! Get some pictures or take a few videos to help them with content. Offer to lend a hand with whatever they need: loading gear, working the door, or even helping with sound. A little help goes a long way, and it’ll come back to you when it’s your turn.
2. Work for your Fans and Appreciate them as they come
Don’t expect to receive the same accolades as someone who’s been at this for years, be willing to earn your way up. Build your fanbase step by step, and your growth will be more healthy. Make sure to appreciate every single person who shows up for you, whether they’re clapping, tipping, or just giving you a compliment. Thank the people who hired you, and treat every show like it’s a big deal, no matter what.
3. Share the Stage
When you’ve got a bigger budget for a gig, think about splitting it with a newer artist or friend to let them open for you. Not only does this help them out, but it also brings more people to the show. You're helping someone else get a shot while making the night bigger and better for everyone.
Note: You can always ask for opening spots but don't take offense if it doesn’t happen when you want it to. Each band has complicated finance needs and strategic goals, as well as various schedules they are already factoring in. Don't let a “no”, become a source of bitterness. As long as both artists support each other and want the best, we can all grow!
4. Support on Social Media
We all know how much social media matters these days, so don’t just focus on your own posts. Like, comment, and share your fellow musicians’ stuff. Show the same kind of love you’d want on your own content. It may seem small, but that kind of online support can help keep things moving for the whole scene.
5. Keep It Friendly and Encourage
Keep competition friendly, and don’t bring any toxic behavior into the mix. Most musicians will tell you they had to let go of bad habits to grow. Not just musically, but as people. Stick around to watch the other bands when you can, and be their biggest fan. Don’t badmouth anyone or gossip, its something we all need to continually keep ourselves accountable with. Give genuine compliments and constructive feedback, and always respect the people working the venue and sound.
Think about how you would've liked to be welcomed into the music scene. Now go out and be that person! The 806 scene has a lot of great acts, and we can all help each other grow into the fanbases we need.
