Barry Vonada: Kansas Musician Capturing Life’s Moments Through Song
From the heart of Shawnee, Kansas, Barry Vonada has spent a lifetime immersed in music. What began as a childhood dream of playing in a band has evolved into a solo career that brings a mix of country and classic rock to audiences who love to dance and connect through music.
A Musical Journey Through Bands and Beyond
Barry’s musical roots stretch back to his early years, where he played in church praise bands, never straying far from his passion. Eventually, the opportunity arose to form his own band, which led him to perform across Kansas and even at an auctioneer festival in Iowa. After that band ran its course, another followed, lasting five years before rehearsals became difficult to coordinate. Barry and his lead singer then formed a duo, but when that fell apart, he took matters into his own hands—stepping out as a solo artist three years ago.
As a bassist first and foremost, transitioning to playing both guitar and bass for his performances was a challenge he embraced. Now, his live shows offer something for everyone, whether it's a stripped-down acoustic set or performances enhanced with backing tracks—a setup he jokingly refers to as “Barry and The iBand.”
Exit 209: Finding Home in a Small Town
Barry’s latest release, “Exit 209”, dropped in August 2024 and captures the sentiment many small-town dreamers come to understand—the idea that leaving home in search of something bigger often leads to the realization that the best things were right there all along. His music, deeply inspired by George Strait and Alan Jackson, reflects that classic ‘90s country storytelling that resonates with listeners who have walked similar roads.

Music, Community, and QuikTrip Napkins
Beyond performing, Barry plays an active role in the local music scene. As a member of the music committee for Old Shawnee Days, he not only booked artists but also took the stage himself, opening for a Liverpool tribute band in 2023. One of his priorities while on the committee was creating more opportunities for solo artists, ensuring that every musician—whether with a band or on their own—had a chance to shine.
Barry’s songwriting reflects real-life moments, from heartache to joy. His song “Thank God for QuikTrip Napkins” tells the story of life’s unexpected moments: dropping a child off at college, grieving a lost friend, and the raw emotion of meeting a first grandchild. It’s the kind of storytelling that sticks with people—simple yet deeply meaningful.
Keeping the Music Alive
Whether he’s playing drums, bass, guitar, or harmonica, Barry Vonada brings an undeniable passion to every performance. Fans appreciate his authenticity and the energy he brings, whether he’s solo or using tracks to fill out the sound. He may have started as a bassist, but today, he's proving that sometimes stepping outside of a comfort zone leads to the best music yet.
For Barry, music is more than just playing notes—it’s about connection. And as long as people keep dancing, he’ll keep playing.
