Thorn Haze: From Family Gatherings to Intimate Venues
Emerging as a unique voice in the independent music scene, Thorn Haze, a self-taught musician from Kansas, brings a raw and unapologetic sound that transcends genres. With roots in El Dorado and Burns, Kansas, Thorn Haze has carved a distinctive path in the music world, blending nostalgia, blues, and experimental vibes.
Thorn Haze’s musical journey began at the age of 10, inspired by his father’s private “futon concerts” of folk and country classics from artists like Hank Williams and Bob Dylan. Learning guitar alongside his twin brother James, the duo formed a band that still plays together occasionally, nearly two decades later. “It was a magical time to be a kid,” Thorn Haze reflects.
During the pandemic, Thorn Haze branched out into a solo project, starting with dreamy, mysterious compositions before evolving into a dynamic, genre-defying artist. His experiences as an antique dealer, college professor, case worker, and freelance audio engineer have all informed his music. Working with renowned producer Kenny Riley and artists like Gary Clark Jr. and Santana inspired a transformative approach, ultimately leading to the birth of Thorn Haze.
Described as “naked, primal, unapologetic, and nostalgic,” Thorn Haze’s music shifts effortlessly between bluesy riffs, trance-like melodies, heavier tones, and the occasional twang. Influences range from the enigmatic David Lynch to the experimental Frank Zappa, reflecting a broad artistic palette.
One of Thorn Haze’s standout tracks, “Little Mama,” emerged spontaneously, captured in a single, unplanned take. “It’s dirty, and I like it,” he says, noting how fans love to “boogie” to its rhythm. Another track, “Meditation Sea,” channels the introspective spirit of Nick Drake and draws inspiration from a life-changing experience studying under producer Joe Chiccarelli in Southern France.
Attending a Thorn Haze show is an intimate and down-to-earth experience. From pizza shops to backyard gigs, each performance is personal and memorable. Fans can expect napkin doodles, Halloween buckets for tips, and an unforgettable connection to the music.
Thorn Haze’s first tour in 2025 promises to be a grassroots celebration of music and community. With a focus on small venues and local businesses, Thorn Haze is committed to creating an inclusive atmosphere where fans can enjoy new music and familiar favorites. Tracks inspired by his meditative and spontaneous creative process will debut, offering a glimpse into his ever-evolving artistry.
“My priority is to keep everything affordable for my fans. Honestly, I am excited for all of the venues. The venues I work with are small business owners and I want to bring in as many people as I can to support us both.”
He emphasizes the importance of mental health and finding joy in everyday life. Whether it’s staying up all night creating or simply walking around a graveyard, his advice is to embrace what makes you happy.
“Managing your mental health is important in the creative journey. Do what makes you happy. It might be staying up all night……. anything your mind can think of. Don’t do anything to harm.”
Thorn Haze found his audience on TikTok, where he posts daily songs and connects with fans. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the platform, he’s optimistic about finding new ways to share art with the world.
