Plemons Bridge: a Unique Sound out of Borger Texas
Plemons Bridge originally started with Luis Torres and William Ratchford playing music together in high school as “Pigs in a Blanket” and using the initials PB. Over time it transformed into Plemons Bridge, which is the name of a local spot in Borger Texas with lots of local memories and legends. From being a spot to explore, hangout, or see if the bridge was haunted, it made sense for Luis that it could be a cool name showing his roots. Luis was born and raised in Borger and has been able to make a name for himself in the panhandle and develop a unique sound with the help of his bandmates Jess Dotson and Andrew Merrell.
Jess used to perform in high school in Phoenix, following in her dads footsteps to be involved with music and later moving to Texas. Andrew is from the Amarillo area, and met Luis working at Texas Tech. The pieces fell into place and Plemons Bridge was reborn, keeping that same creative spirit from the early days, with a new sound and texture provided by Jess and Andrew.
Live Music Experience
Luis started doing paid gigs about two years ago starting with a couple great opportunities. These opportunities made Luis realize that this was something he could really do and work towards, and led him to start performing in Amarillo regularly at High Fidelity Records. His schedule grew rapidly by staying diligent and networking at every show. Plemons Bridge has now been playing anywhere and everywhere, developing a name for themselves and “paying dues”.
Along with expanding connections, Plemons Bridge has been able to have a better feel for stage fright and nerves. Luis explained “It helps to know and understand what kind of place and what kind of crowd you are playing with”, and going on to say that many factors can affect nerves and he has been able to grow into being confident on stage. Here is a list Luis made for us that shows different things for shows:
Having a setlist that people will recognize or connect with is very important. Luis admits he started by mainly doing songs he liked but noticed a few people wanted certain songs or artists, leading him to make a more audience friendly set.
Some gigs, like opening spots, can be nerve racking as you want to make sure you uphold the level of the headliner and can make their crowd enjoys your sound.
Checking out the venue beforehand helps you have some ease of mind by knowing where things will be and what the vibe is like.
Knowing the staff and regulars can make you a lot more comfortable and welcomed, so make sure to make friends and build those relationships!
Having a musician friend come and do a song with you is always fun and helps with engagement and sharing the attention. Luis mentioned he has had Jess sing tricky songs like “Tennessee Whiskey” as a guest, when there are songs outside of his range that the audience may want to hear.
Luis gave these tips and explained that these are things he has learned over time and helped his mindset when performing. Nerves still happen, but we can be proactive at making sure they don't limit our artistic expression.
How Each Member Brings Unique Skills to Shape Plemons Bridge's Distinct Sound
Each member of Plemons Bridge brings a unique and essential set of skills to the band, shaping both their sound and presence. Luis takes charge of songwriting, booking, social media, photography, and graphic design, ensuring the band is creatively cohesive and well-represented. Andrew infuses the live performances with energy and spontaneity, while also contributing to songwriting, networking, and managing live gear. Alongside his work with Plemons Bridge, Andrew co-owns an instrument setup company, Merrell Guitar Works, with his brother. Jess plays a pivotal role in developing the band's identity, contributing her talent for lyrics, graphic design, and adding rich harmonic textures that give Plemons Bridge its distinct sound.
Collaborative Songwriting Defines Plemons Bridge’s Signature Sound
The songwriting process for Plemons Bridge is a collaborative effort that blends each member's strengths. Luis often begins with a chord progression and a few compelling lyrics, then brings the initial idea to the band and his original writing partner, William Ratchford, for further brainstorming and development. Jess adds depth to the lyrics and crafts harmonies, enriching the song's emotional texture. Andrew complements the writing with his own lyrical input and a rhythmic groove, helping to shape the overall feel of the music. Together, they create songs that reflect the distinct chemistry and shared vision of the band.
Plemons Bridge is looking to record 3 original songs they currently perform live in 2025. You can help them on this journey by coming out to shows, buying merch, and supporting their content! Stay in the know by following them across social media!
