Music Venues: How a Venue can help a Scene

Tips for venues, owners, managers, and staff!

We as a company love you and are grateful that you have music! Any accommodations for music are very helpful and provide jobs to our music scene. We love to support your efforts to have music and hope to bring your venue to the next level to be able to accommodate more music as you grow! This article features venues that came to mind as we thought about their impact.

If you would like your venue to be on our next list, please reach out and we would love to talk with you. Any venues are welcome to set up a meeting with our team to discuss anything we can help you with, to better help our music scene together. We are musicians ourselves who love live music and want to do everything we can to make our local venues more successful.

Sad Monkey Mercantile- Canyon, Tx

Sad Monkey in Canyon Tx has been helping our music scene by providing three excellent spaces for performers. Sad Monkey Mercantile is a neat shop that often has acoustic acts, Sad Monkey Hall is an awesome building behind the mercantile with a nice stage, and of course the all new “Doug Out” outdoor stage for the patio!

Supporting artists and investing in their venue for more music stood out to us as a venue that we wanted to support! Go check out the shop and catch a show there soon!

The 806 Coffee & Lounge, Amarillo Tx

This venue has stood out to me for a while now, because of their willingness to support not only music but all art. 5 days a week music, and sometimes more. The 806 Coffee and Lounge has allowed so many artists a place to express themselves, and has weekly open mics by Remy DeLara of Native Crowds.

Please join us in supporting this venue and giving them a huge congratulations on 17 years!

Skooterz Bar & Grill- Amarillo Tx

Skooterz has developed a reputation in our scene by giving many bands their first chance in the scene. Skooterz provides a home for many genres that are overshadowed, and helps these artist promote their shows as well.

We love Skooterz and encourage you to go catch some shows there this month!

The Toppled Turtle Brewing Company and Brick Oven Pizza Kitchen - Dumas Tx

The Toppled Turtle has been giving acoustic acts and bands a chance to start, or to be exposed to a new area. The Turtle is leading the charge for live music in Dumas TX, and treats every artist with great respect.

We hope you make the trip to Dumas and try some amazing pizza, beer, and support the live music they are having!

Scissortails- Woodward Ok

Scissortails stuck out to our team because they are so driven to support the arts and working to provide jobs for acoustic acts. Providing music and supporting artists has amazing impacts on a community.

We hope many of you find time to make it out to Woodward to support some awesome people. And to our Oklahoma readers, we hope you consider Scissortails when looking for good coffee and good music!

Notes:

A good venue is one that takes care of artists and lets people get a shot. All of these venues are crucial to our music scene and have allowed countless musicians to develop and become our strongest local acts. Without them, many wouldn’t have gotten a chance to perform in the scene and share their music! We ask that you would support them and let these amazing venues know how much of an impact they have on our communities.

Things a venue can provide to help an artist:

  • A tab for musicians to cover food and drinks is greatly appreciated by every musician we have worked with. It is a great way to show appreciation and to support them even more.

  • Travel costs. Having a traveling musician is a great thing to support artists and the scene. If possible, gas costs or even a hotel cost goes a long way for these gig workers.

Free ways to better your venue!

  • We encourage having good attention on when to stop the house music, or a good communication system for artists to ask.  This is a minor thing that can make a big difference in stressful performances. Many artists experience some shows where this is an added stressor, and it is one of those little things that costs nothing, and can improve your venue.

  • Lots of these artists have a family or have work in the mornings, so we prefer to get our pay pretty soon following our last set. A great and easy way to manage this is to deliver the pay to the artists after the last song as they are starting to load up their gear.

  • Share videos! Sharing videos and sending these videos that you take to the artist helps us get videos to promote our music and get more shows. This is very appreciated by artists, since they are often too busy to record! This is going an extra mile for these guys and it can also help promote your venue too!

  • Help promote shows! We all want the same thing and that’s a great show with a great crowd. When a venue, artist, and promoter work together for a show, it can turn into an awesome event that blows expectations and leaves all parties better off.

The impact that music venues have on a local scene cannot be overstated. By providing spaces for artists to perform, fostering a supportive atmosphere, and actively promoting shows, venues play a crucial role in the growth of the music community. From small acoustic stages to bustling bars, every venue has the power to uplift artists and bring people together through the shared experience of live music. We encourage you to support your local venues, attend shows, and celebrate the vital role they play in keeping the music alive in our communities. Together, we can build a thriving music scene!
