Katie Beth Mihm: Country Music Artist, Rancher, and Advocate for Indigenous Rights

Katie Beth Mihm is a singer/songwriter who has been the female vocalist for Ri Wolf and the Prairie Hawks for two years before creating her own band, Katie Beth & Coyote Rose. Her music is a blend of Texas country and 90s country. These dance songs are written from inspirations from her own personal experiences.

Mihm had begun writing music when her biological father passed away. Spending her time grieving, she taught herself to play the piano. “I couldn’t write music before,” Mihm said. Shortly before her father had passed away, she had broken off her engagement. From this experience, she wrote the song, “Diamond Rings”.

Diamond Rings is about things not working out and the grieving process.

“White Horse” is the song she released for her dad. A few days before Christmas in 2022, this song was written in front of the piano. “God spoke to me,” Mihm recalled. “The words just flowed through me.” She hints at her faith and the book of Revelations from the bible in this song. “I felt like I was flying under the radar, but I don’t think they realized it was a Christian song.” Mihm said.

“White Horse” was very popular in the United Kingdom. It made number seven on Marie Crichton Country list, alongside Reba McEntire and Luke Grimes. This isn’t the only country to enjoy “White Horse” because it has made its way to Japan and Russia. “It makes me happy thinking the Japanese are singing my songs on karaoke,” Mihm said.

Mihm’s newest release, “Ain’t No Cowgirl”, came out in June. This song was inspired by her husband’s ex-girlfriends. “My husband hates those fake eyelashes.” Mihm said. Rusty Mihm is a huge supporter of his wife and currently plays guitar for the band.

“Kick Rocks” was inspired by her brother who is a cowboy. She remembers he would bring around a lot of different girlfriends. When asked what happened to the last girl, he would respond with, “I told her to kick rocks.” This line, Mihm realized, could be said by the girl instead. “It's about ending the relationship because it didn’t turn out like you thought it would.” Mihm said.

Katie Beth Mihm is known for playing a dulcimer. It’s a smaller looking guitar used in Appalachian music. It has a harmony string and the frets are uneven, unlike a guitar’s frets that are spaced evenly apart. Dolly Parton has been known to play one, and it has become Mihm’s trademark. “It’s given me my edge, “ Mihm confessed.

Music isn’t the only thing Mihm is passionate about. She is also the ranch foreman of Mihm Ranch. Running a ranch is a full time job, but Katie Beth and her husband, Rusty Mihm, take it even one step further by teaching others how to homestead. They are also bloggers of FARM FED, a blog that teaches how to garden, preserve, and the basics of agriculture.

Katie Beth Mihm is also spreading awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW). She recently did a photo shoot with Stetson Hunter to spread awareness. The tragedy of Cole Brings Plenty affects her deeply and she wants to help spread awareness any way she can. This movement is very personal to her heart since she had been abducted at the age of 15. “It took them ten days before they found me.” Mihm recalled.

I try to represent my indigenous heritage and being a cowgirl.
