The Stray Sons: Forged by Chance, Defined by Sound

How It All Began

The Stray Sons' journey began like many great rock stories: a mix of serendipity and shared passion. Frontman Brad had been performing solo acoustic sets around Amarillo, Texas, including at the now-closed Rock N’ Roll Coffee Shop. Frustrated by little success finding bandmates through Facebook ads, Brad caught a lucky break in December 2022. Larry Dunn invited him to play an acoustic set, where fate started to take shape.

Among the audience that night were Jared Golden and Luke Barrow, who, along with Larry, were members of the Kalum Patterson Band. Luke joined Brad on the cajón for a few songs, and during a break, the group talked about jamming together. The chemistry was immediate, and soon, The Stray Sons were born.

The Name Behind the Band

Brad suggested the name “The Stray Sons,” drawing inspiration from the story of the prodigal son but with a twist. Instead of returning home, the "Stray Sons" carve their own path, embracing independence and defying societal labels. The name struck a chord with the band, perfectly reflecting their rebellious spirit and determination, and it has been their identity ever since.

Crafting Their Sound

The Stray Sons approach songwriting as a collaborative art. While Brad often drafts lyrics or foundational ideas, the band collectively shapes each song until it embodies their collective identity.“If it fits, it fits. I usually present an idea or foundation, and the group makes it into our personality and sound. A standout moment in their journey was opening for Them Dirty Roses in Abilene, Texas, which marked a rewarding milestone for the band’s hard work.Brad’s transition from drummer to frontman has shaped his approach to performing. Drawing on his experience as a wrestler and a Christian rock band frontman, he learned to engage with the crowd and push his comfort zone.

Behind the Songs

Their latest release, “Lowdown SOB”, reflects the raw emotion and storytelling that define The Stray Sons. Born from a personal breakup and inspired by being labeled a "lowdown SOB," the song started bluesy and then the final version came together with a bassline riff from Trent Jones. The track was self-recorded and polished by renowned producer Skidd Mills.

The Stray Sons have ambitious plans for the coming year. They aim to record and release at least two new songs, introduce more original music into their live sets, and expand their reach with a tour to Destin, Florida, and beyond.
